We are very happy to inform you that General José Gallardo of Mexico was released, by Presidential decree, at 7.30pm on 7 February 2002. President Fox ordered his release by shortening his sentence to the time he has already served. Amnesty International welcomes the news of his release but stresses the fact that his conviction still remains an issue that the Mexican governement has not addressed. This is great news for Gallardo and his family. Thanks to all of you for your work over the years, for the pressure you have put on the government to release him, it has all paid off. Obviously his conviction still remains an issue but for now we celebrate his release.
